Earthquakes were reported during the Civil War. One very large quake hit the Carolina's/East Tennessee region in early September 1861, shaking up a lot of people. Charleston, S.C. was flattened by a very large quake in the mid 1880s. It seems the Southeast is hit by a large quake every 25 to 35 years, with some exceptions.
