It is my understanding, no matter how they were classified, at the end, Capt English Independant Cavalry was with the 15th Alabama at Little River (Baldwin and Monroe County line) on April 11, 1865. There's a story somewhere of the Confederate Flag bearer being mortally wounded but still kept the flag upright. I think he used a tree.

In the South, at some point in those years, if there was a 'home guard' they became the first line of defense. Considering the size of the land mass and the dwindling number of Confederate troops, that had to have happened more than once or twice.
