Straight assessment from the authority. In May 1861, 10 men were elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. They all had Southern sympathies and every man who was nominated and elected....went to prison or into exile shortly afterward. Lincolns's Secretary of State, William H. Seward, bragged to British Ambassador Lord Lyons that he could "ring a bell" and have a man arrested in Ohio, New York, or any other state......and had even more power over the population than the Queen of England had.
