Yesterday a female, dressed in soldier's clothes, surrendered herself to the mayor, and was sent before the provost-marshal.

That statement is confusing. I thought that provost-marshal was a title given to a YANKEE officer who was placed in charge of subjugating civilians in occupied Southern territories, like New Orleans AFTER the invasion or Middle TN after the fall of Ft. Donelson.
