I believe this project has been in the works for a long time. It seems Speilburg made some statements in the past how he got many of his ideas for some of the Star Wars characters and story lines from the events and characters of the WBTS. If I recall correctly he said part of Emperor Palpatine's character was based on Lincoln. That's not gonna go over big in Hollywood if I don't miss my guess.
