If you are suggesting he had "shell shock" I have no evidence of that. By all reports he was fully functional after the bombardment and handled his affairs with a clear mind. I believe he was suffering from debilitating depression that grew as the war continued. I know his character showed he had always been known as a caring person and through himself at efforts to relieve the suffering of others; that may have been an issue as the war progressed. Not having any other information I am only guessing from what little we do know.
