Report of Rear-Admiral Farragut, U. S. Navy, regarding the disposi- tion of notorious blockade runner James Campbell. No. 416.1 FLAGSHIP HARTFORD, Mobile Bay, September 14, 1864. SIR: I have the honor to report to the Department that on the 19th ultimo Lieutenant-Commander Jouett, of the Metacomet, when in the upper part of the bay, captured one James Campbell, well known as a notorious blockade runner. He is an old Mobile pilot, and as such [has] been constantly employed running between this bay and Havana. He was engaged to take out the Virgin only the night before our fleet passed the forts. In accordance with the general instructions of the Department to send such notorious characters to the Tortugas, I directed Lieutenant- Commander Wells, of the Galena, to take him there and deliver him over to the commanding officer of the fort, with a letter from me explaining who he was and why he had been sent. Very respectfully, your obedient servant, D. G. FARRAGUT, Rear-Admiral, Commanding West Gulf Blockading Sguadron.
