On this date 150 years ago, President Lincoln received Mrs. John Fremont, wife of the General; she had traveled to the Union capital to provide support for her husband's position in Missouri. She was concerned about Lincoln being influenced against General Fremont, and the interview, by some accounts, was not a calm one.

Confederates at Carnifex Ferry, Virginia, fell back after being attacked by General Rosecrans. The Union troops outnumbered the Southerners, and the Northern victory was instrumental in helping to preserve western Virginia for the Union.
