On this date 150 years ago, in Kentucky, the Cumberland River was the scene of intensive action as the USS Conestoga took two Confederate vessels.

Ship Island, Mississippi, was evacuated by rebel forces, leaving the area open to subsequent occupation by Union troops. The North would use Ship Island as an operating base of action along the Gulf Coast.

In Missouri, Confederate General Price continued to press Colonel Mulligan's troops at Lexington; the later was waiting for help from General Fremont.
