I'm assuming that David was referring to military casualties sustained during a recognized battle/skirmish/engagement. Henry Lawson Wyatt is considered the first martyr of the revolution. Bethel was considered the first organized land clash of the war. Hence the motto for North Carolina: "First at Bethel, Furthest at Gettysburg, Last at Appomattox". I've even heard NPS Rangers call North Carolina troops "the backbone" of the ANV. I'm proud of my ancestor that was there at Bethel and Gettysburg. I'm sad that he was wounded with Heth's command on the first day. He did return to service. But was in and out of hospitals for the duration. He was taken POW in Richmond on 3 April 1865 in a hospital. God bless you Jordan Livingston.
