On this date 150 years ago, General Robert Anderson, the former hero of Fort Sumter and currently in command of the Union Department of the Cumberland, was relieved of his post and replaced by General Sherman. Anderson had for some time been suffering from nervous strain and was unable to continue his military duties; after his departure from that last post, he never again resumed military active duty. Soon, General Sherman experienced similiar exhaustion in the demanding position of head of the Cumberland troops, although Sherman remained in command at Louisville, Kentucky.
