On this date 150 years ago, the writ of habeas corpus was suspended in the District of Columbia for all military-related cases.

Skirmishing broke out in Kentucky near West Liberty and at Hodgenville. This line of Confederate troops in Kentucky was a matter of grave concern to the Union and to General Sherman in particular as he did not want the Confederates to advance deeper into Kentucky.
