On this date 150 years ago, General Winfield Scott made a formal petition to President Lincoln concerning resignation from his position as General-in-Chief of the Union Army. Despite his experience, he was a veteran of both the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, Scott was prompted to action by his advancing age and personality clashes with younger, ambitious military personnel. Scott convinced Lincoln to grant his retirement request and was succeeded by General McClellan.
