The famous sculpture A Doyle, a stickler for detail, approached Col. William Preston Johnston, then president of Tulane University. Doyle at that time had an atelier in New Orleans and New York City. The final details for his Metairie equestrian statue (Doyle often referred to his works as "busts) were discussed with ASJ's son WPJ. Details like ASJ's Mexican War Dragoon bit, his monogramed saddle blanket (ASJ), his uniform and kepi (Doyle changed from slouch hat on his initial plaster to kepi) and THE SWORD, not a "plain regulation cavalry sword" (pattern 1840), but an infantry officer's sword of the 1850 pattern. The statue was dedicated five months later; Jefferson Davis himself said it was the most perfect likeness of ASJ ever created! See here attached and following. BF
