On this date 150 years ago, a navel engagement began between Federal batteries at Fort Pickens, Florida, and Confederates at Fort McRee and Barrancas as well as the Pensacola Navy Yard. The Union ground forces were aided by the USS "Niagara" and the USS "Richmond" on the first day of the barrage. There was damage on both sides but ultimately proved to be an inconclusive exchange.
