US & Confederate Cavalry horses

I understand Confederate Cavalrymen supplied their own horses, and were paid a daily rate for their use. What was the going rate? I have read that the value of at least one horse and equipage was $100 for the horse, and an equal amount for the gear. What happened if the horse was killed or lost?

I think the US Cavalry mounts were provided by the Army. If so, how much was paid for each horse, and what was the value of the gear? If his horse was killed or lost, did the US trooper simply draw another horse? Thanks in advance. Stan
