My opinion isn't important, and everyone will have different opinions. Those of us who pursue history are more interested in the opinions of those who actually participated in events. Here's an opinion I believe to be representative of Southerners who voted to leave the Union --

Another significant question concerns how the Fire-Eaters took command of events and led a successful secession movement in 1860. Few people in the South listened to them before Harpers Ferry, yet by the election of 1860, Fire-Eaters had strong followings in most slave states. No one here has raised that topic for discussion.
