On this date 150 years ago, Charleston, South Carolina, was ravaged by fire, and half the city was destroyed, including much of the business district. Such an occurrence did psychological damage to the Confederacy, as Charleston was an important center of operations in the South. Combined with the Hilton Head Island occupation by Union troops and the relatively effective Federal blockade, the fire proved to be extremely fortuitous to the strategy of the North.
