I was helping a lady the other day. She was trying to locate an ancestor who came to America in the late 1800's. She said she'd checked Ellis Island list but they weren't on it. I had to explain to her that Ellis Island was not the only entry point in New York and it wasn't open until a lot later than the time frame she was seeking. She had never heard of Castle Gardens, the point of entry my GGrands came through. Hubby's O'Connell GGrands came from Ireland through the port in Mobile. His GGrandfather was a stevedore going where the work was. After a couple of years there, they came to Pensacola and he worked at the port here. It helps to know the political climate in the country they left to get a better understanding on their reasons to immigrate.
