It looks as if there's always been a struggle for those who, for the most part, come from the 'herding' ancestors. The pride in 'self' is inherent to their genetic code and no matter who tries, it's not going to be erased. Those tartan plaids were never erased. The many attempts to change their religious affiliation never worked. We are still holding on to our own specific cultural symbols even today as they come under constant attack. I do believe McWhiney was right on a lot of his points.
