On this date 150 years ago, martial law in St. Louis provided for the seizure of pro-Southern property in the event that its owners had refused to support pro-Union fugitives. General Halleck, who had strengthened these martial law orders, allowed for the arrest of persons attempting to subvert the law.

Another group of stone-laden vessels were sunk in Charleston Harbor to prevent Confederate shipping from entering the port. A clash between Union blockaders and the rebel vessel "Calhoun" near the mouth of the Mississippi River resulted in the vessel being taken by the North. The following day two more Confederate ships were run aground and burned as they tried to slip away from the Federals at this Mississippi point near the Southwest Pass.
