Alan, Whether the 5 "Lost Brigades" ever made it to Vicksburg is questionable at best. Obviously they all didn't and "Retreating Joe" Johnston abandonded Pemberton and retreated over 16 miles with no Federals in pursuit. Quoting directly from Bowden and Ward's book, which is heavily footnoted, here are Lee's missing veteran brigades. Also remember that Jenkin's and Corse's brigades were from Picketts Division. The following numbers are reported on May 31,1863. Jenkins and Corse both pleaded personally with President Davis to be returned to the ANV. Jenkins was outraged that he would not be participating in the Pennsylvania Campaign.

Robert Ransom, Jr's Brigade
24th North Carolina
25th North Carolina
35th North Carolina
49th North Carolina
8th North Carolina Battalion

Present & under arms: 3,067

John R. Cooke's Brigade
15th North Carolina
27th North Carolina
46th North Carolina
48th North Carolina

Present & under arms: 2.332

Micah Jenkins' Brigade
1st South Carolina (Hagood's)
2nd South Carolina (Rifles)
5th South Carolina
6th South Carolina
Hampton's South Carolina Legion
Palmetto S.C. Sharpshooters

Present & under arms: 2,644

Montgomery D Corse's Brigade
15th Virginia
17th Virginia
30th Virginia
32nd Virginia

Present & under arms: 1,100

N.G. "Shanks" Evan's Brigade
17th South Carolina
22nd South Carolina
23rd South Carolina
61st South Carolina
Holcombe South Carolina Legion

Present & under arms: 2,000

"These five brigades amounted to more than 11,000 experienced infantry in 20 regiments and four smaller battalions. The strength's listed above are found in OR 18, pp 929, 1086. Figures for Evans and Corse are estimates based on prior returns. According to Corse (OR 27,pt.3, p. 893), on June 15, 1863, his command did not number "over 1,200 effective men." Cooke reported on June 20, 1863 (OR 27, pt.3, p.909) that the number of officers and other ranks present in his brigade was 2,486. See also returns for June 30, 1863 (OR 27, pt. 3, pp. 946-947).
