First Secession Flag?

I found this interest article in the Charleston Mercury dated November 21, 1861.

Nov. 17, 1860. Captain (Commodore) M. Berry of the passenger steamship Columbia, hosted the Palmetto Flag from the peak of the mainmast while leaving the wharf at New York bound for Charleston, S.C. Then when off Governor's Island and closing up with the steamships Yorktown and Alabama- the former bound for Richmond, and the latter for Savannha- took down the Stars and Stripes from the stern color-staff of his ship, and substituted a new piece of bunting he had prepared, showing fifteen white stars upon a vermillion ground, which was fully displayed the fresh breeze, and under which every passenger felt proud to sail.
