If you ever get a chance, read the biography of Gideon J. Pillow by Nathaniel Cheairs Hughes, PhD. It includes one of the best accounts of the Confederate breakout attempt at Fort Donelson I've ever read.

I agree the failure of the breakout attempt and the premature surrender of the fort were irreparable and unnecessary tragedies for the Confederacy.
