On this date 150 years ago, in a statement that left the Confederates no room for negotiation, General Grant issued his terms for the disposition of Fort Donelson; "No terms except unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted. I propose to move immediately upon your works." General Bukner was left with no alternative, and so relinquished possession of the military position that had proved to be a costly one to hold. Estimates of Southern casuaties hover around 1500, and approximentally 1200 soldiers surrendered. Union troops under General Grant lost 500 killed, 2100 wounded and 224 missing out of a total fighting force of 27,000. Needless to say, this victory for the North was of major importance and proved to be similiarly significant a defeat in Southern eyes. Tennessee and Kentucky were lost and the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers were in Union control afterwards.
