Stuart was lost, with no idea where to find Lee or his army. By June 30th Confederate troopers were utterly exhausted, traveling one road after another in fruitless search for friendly forces. Stuart's men were falling asleep in their saddles. Captured wagons or not, these cavalrymen couldn't have ridden faster under the circumstances.
