Re: Religion in Early America ~ Church and State

Lest anyone else misunderstand this discussion, the concept that civil and religious powers should remain in seperate arenas did not originate with Thomas Jefferson. Roger Williams, the minister who founded the Colony of Rhode Island, first made this an issue in the English-speaking settlements. Exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony due to his teachings, Williams composed the charter for Rhode Island. The document states with emphasis that it was intended for matters civil only. This distinctly differed with Massachusetts, where a bailiff with a 'show-cause' order would appear on the doorstep of any parishoner who failed to attend Sunday worship.
