Mr. Pitts,

As you know, it is hard to know everything. I do know that since the South had very few manufacturing elements they imported a great deal of goods. According to a New Orleans News Papers report in 1861, that it amounted to about 60-70 million per year. The major amount paid into the coffers of the Federal Government. Why should the North pay for things they already produce? The tax you asked about is something I am not looking at. I do know that the Congress of the U.S. did pass the 80% rate in 1863 on a number of items. I have looked at more then just this cause. I believe that taxes were the reason for us breaking away from England, and that most political people are elected because of some economic stand, i.e., people vote their pocketbook. When you add this with the events around slavery, states rights, failure to protect the citizens of the land from the Mexican Army, bandits, and native Americans. That people were tired of a system of compromises that failed to end the problems with the country. There seemed to be some sort of compromise every two years. They go by different names unlike the ones in 1820, 1850, and 1854. And the fact that the two groups of people, North/South did fight each other around 1650's in England. The Roundheads and Cavaliers of the English Civil War (a true Civil War) fought each other at that time, and they still don't like each other. Their differing views clashed then and they will clash in 1860's in this country. In short...Slavery was just part of it. I am now finished with this. This is not the place for this. I have given my email address and that should be it. Let these nice people have their site back. I have had the joy of posting here from time to time. I do not want to out stay my welcome. Ya'll have a good day you hear.
