Only Confederate Flag "captured" in California

The only Confederate Flag "captured" in California during the Civil War took place on July 4, 1861, in Sacramento, during July 4th celebrations, secessionist Major J. P. Gillis celebrated the independence of the United States from Britain and the southern states from the Union. He unfurled a silk Confederate flag of his own design (with 17 stars) and proceeded to march down the street to both applause and jeers of onlookers until a couple of Union men attacked him in an alley and took it away from him. They then took the flag on top of a local hotel, waving it and daring any secessionist to take it away from them...according to the local paper. This flag somehow survived and is the State Captitol museum in Sacramento, Ca.
