Hmmm, I've gotta check into this. It seems to have escaped my attention. I do remember reading in some publication a long time ago that there were many citizens, both white and free colored who said they were willing to fight to keep the city. That did fizzle out though. Not sure if they were ever really 'signed' in.

There were many of the less wealthy citizens who took up living outside the walls of Ft Barrancas when the Union took it back. The first of these were said to be free coloreds. Those who had the means went to Greenville to ride out the storm. The Union took over residences in town and did quite a bit of damage. They used the Old Christ Church as a stable. Very bad manners. Those who were living outside the Ft were not only able to get some food but they were also afraid of those who were in town.
