Yes Ms. Pam, I am aware that southern blacks served in many areas of industry that aided the Confederate cause. But somehow they are not concidered as being important unless they carried a gun like the Louisiana Native Guards who according to one post were not armed until the Union Army armed them.

My point is that after the John Brown/Harper's Ferry raid, whose purpose was well known to the southern people and who were very concerned about northern abolishionist pulling the same stunt some where else. That the southern people went from a position of having a fair amount of trust in their personal slaves to a position of having very little trust in the Negro race as a whole.

Because they did not see any real effort to surpress the radical abolishionist movement in the north, and they did not see any hope of anything being done with Lincoln as President. They did the only thing they could do. But they still did not trust large groups of Blacks no matter how loyal to be armed for the fear that those same Blacks would, once armed, indeed revolt anyway. Or at some criitical point in a Battle cause the destruction off the Confederate Army by simply desserting, or surrendering in mass. They did not mind individual slaves to be armed as long as they were well supervised, but not organized groups as was purposed by Gen'l Patrick Cleburne's famous purposal, even though that may have saved the Confederacy. This fear of internal slave revolt kept the Southern people from fully using this source of manpower.

They in fact saw the Federals arming the Color Troops regiments and the Emancipation Proclaimation as exactly what they feared in 1860 of the Radical Abolishionist and John Brown were trying to do. Trying to start a southern race war, which in fact is what they did do by using the U.S.C.T. regiments.

So is there any wonder as to why segragation and the race relations that evolved in the south came about, when the Abolishionist, the United States Government, and the US Army used the Blacks as a weapon against the southern people?
