That is the way it should have been. The slaves should have been allowed to serve in the Confederate Army at the outset and gain freedom. The South would have won its Independence and black people would be assimilated into society 150 years ago. But this conjecture gets us nowhere. There should not have been any slavery in the first place. Slavery was legal until 1866 and no one, including Lincoln, saw that mustering black troops intp the US Army would create a new paradigm for generations of political chattel slavery.
