Use of slaves for any military purpose other than labor did indeed divide Confederate leaders. Some notable officers spoke in favor of it, but until late 1864 virtually every man in the Confederate government opposed the concept. Colonel Oates wrote the only postwar account I've seen by a Confederate officer which explores this lost opportunity. Do you know of others?
