Re: two tacos short of a Mexican sampler plate

According to the statement attributed to Mr Hill, ninety Negro Confederate veterans lived within a five mile radius of Mooresville AL, all on the state pension roll, circa 1899. Note that he doesn't say widows, which accounts for at least half the number on the pension rolls of that time. If anyone seriously believes this statement, Ancestry has Alabama county pension rolls by year on line. I don't believe either Limestone or nearby Morgan County has more than 200 names on record, including widows. It wouldn't be too difficult to check the men's names against the census to check color, black or white.

For what it's worth, if Mr Hill really meant U S C T veterans, then his statement may be accurate.

Also, living in a retirement community, I've learned that not everyone can make accurate statements as they once did. We have a friend who turns 99 next week and is clear as a bell. We frequently play cards with her, and she routinely takes us to the proverbial cleaners. We're the ones whose mental soundness should be questioned (why do we return for more punishment?).

On the other hand, many others are two tacos short of a Mexican sampler plate.

For example, a retired Honeywell engineer routinely in his late eighties offers facts that cannot be true. He also gets to say things that would get me slapped (or worse). For example, last week I took him to the VA for an exam. After the sweet young technician offered a report on his condition, she asked if we had any questions. He smiled and asked, "Would you sit in my lap?"
