I thought that William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield was the leader of the Logan Wildcats, a pro-Confederate band of partisans. Perhaps he took leave from the regular army to fight on the home front. Perhaps he got his nickname during the unpleasantness that preceded the feud.
