There is a granite monument dedicated to the memory of sixty-nine slaves who died during the construction of Fort DeRussy, La., on the fort grounds at Fort DeRussy State Historic Site. The monument was erected in 1999. As far as I know, it is the only monument in the whole United States that honors the memory of slaves who died in service to their country. If anyone is aware of any others, I'd sure like to hear about it.
