Why Non-Slaveholding Southerners Fought

At the Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) site is an article by Gordon Rhea, a noted Civil War author on "Why Non-Slaveholding Southerners Fought". The URL is http://www.civilwar.org/education/history/civil-war-overview/why-non-slaveholding.html.

I agree with many of his statements to varying degrees; however, I do not necessarily agree with his conclusions. In fact, I'm not exactly sure what he is saying at the end of the article. I'd like to hear the thoughts of others regarding this text.
