"they made decisions based on what they perceived as their personal and their family's safety,".....I totally agree with this. I wonder if my ancestors that lived in Fannin County Texas set around the suppertable and discussed what was happening back home in Tennessee and other parts of the country that was hundeds of miles from them? There was definitely a threat from the freed slaves here in the deep South, but I don't think there was out there in that part of Texas at that time, could be wrong on this one though. It don't take much to get a Southern boy to fight when it comes to his family's safety. From what I've read about my family, they hated the North, but nothing specific in writing as I've been able to find so far.
