Obviously GB and Mr Barton don't know (and don't care) that people in the Confederacy had a lively debate about freeing slaves in exchange for military service.

This self-serving attempt to pose as an average guy who discovered a profound hidden truth does not enhance his reputation. Does it take special revelation to know that states rights as we understand them today had little to do with formation of the Confederacy? This scene was clearly invented to advance his own agenda.
