2X4 noted. By the way, my source states the Springfield Pistol-Carbines was issued in bulk, in 1862 eleven companies of Union cavalry were issued them. That after the war, the U.S. government still had several hundred on hand and 322 were finally auctioned off in 1880. Harper's ferry arsenal had a number of these and maybe this is were some Confederates got their issue.
