Frederick, If I recall correctly even as far back as the summer of 1861 he was on duty as a teamster. The Captain of his company was Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Johns. Richard Chaddick was married to his cousin Sarah Jane Johns. I would be willing to bet that from knowing him from before the war that Capt. Johns was familiar with his skills. Capt. Johns later rose to the rank of Lt. Col. and had command of the 9th Mississippi during the 1864 Atlanta campaign and twice assumed command of the 7th Mississippi after their Col. was wounded/KIA. Once at Murfreesboro/Stones River and once at Franklin. He would have been in a position to keep Grandpa Richard on "extra duty". I hope this wsn't one of them "brother-in-law deals" LOL!
