Another thing not often mentioned in regard to Fort Pillow is that the flag was not lowered, so most Confederate troops did not know if there was a surrender or not. And the black troops who tried to escape to the yankee gunboat would pretend to surrender then again pick up their weapons and try to escape or fight again. This all came up in the investigation conducted by Sherman, who cleared Forrest. Also, for the edification of Glenn Beck, no one was skinned, especially by Forrest.
