Looking at the other photos from Fort Mahone, I see lots of closeups of dead Confederates but no Union soldiers. Why would the photographer change his theme and take a picture of a Federal and Confederate? Looks like the man in background is wearing expensive riding boots, like Southern servants did. That man is not dressed as a Fed.
