Ruff had been a professor of mathmatics at the Marietta Military Academy, on Powder Springs Road, the current site of the Marietta Country Club, near the location of the Confederate Cemetery in Marietta. Ruff was later killed at knoxville. Col. W.T. Wofford, original CO of the 18th, Commanded the Texas Brigade that day, Hood having been promoted.
