Re: Largest muzzle loader ever built

Funny. We always warn infantry about passing through a gun line to wait for the last shot and a signal from the gunner or battery/section commander, and with your mouth open. We fired on some Federals a few weeks ago in Sharpsburg. We knew that the Confederate infantry's oblique to the right would draw them to our flank. We redeployed to the right rear, up the hill, and worked off the limber where it stood. They came over the ridge and saw us with eyes wide open and mouths agape. We let em have it. Sometimes the safety factor is of no use. They KEPT COMING. We turned 90 degrees and reclaimed our original aim. We fired on them 4 times after they got into position. Enough to kill them all. Nobody fell. And none of them tried to take us as was the scenario. I think we scared the crap out of them. We got ready to load a double round when I realized that they were only about 30 or less yards away. Lucky for them we stood down. I would have singed their whiskers. The bad thing about reenacting is that nobody understands the devastation of artillery. And neither the infantry or especially the cavalry understand what the safety signals that artillery use are for. We fire on the field by Gilham's Manual. Load, ready, FIRE. That NCWAA "implements on the hubs" drill is of no use. They still don't get it. You march or fall in front of my gun.....I'll get ya. Me and my guys are all deaf. Why shouldn't you riflemen be? I've been overrun by cavalry after section fire. But I have NEVER had any infantry show interest in taking us out. Reenactors need to understand the term "support".
