Re: States Rights and Wrongs of the South

Hmm, I need to check out that James Hamilton.

It always boils down to money. Don't care what the 'side' issue may be, you cannot get anything done without money. How many people have tried to avoid the 'tax' by making their own whiskey? It's not that they think the product is better, it's 'cheaper'. When do many wars end? When one side runs out of money for the needed missles to fire.

Arguments can get double complicated for the American Civil War because some want to toss slavery in as the only issue. It isn't that simple and we all know it. Some believed the slaves were part of the economy and individual wealth. Well, they were. Sounds bad but it was legal and it's not like slavery was started in the South and it only existed in the South but depends on who you read or talk to, it was the Souths boil that needed lancing. Not pretty but neither was the eventual or immediate poverty that many Confederate veterans found at wars end. It's sort of like what some of us see coming up the road. A huge storm and no one can avoid it but if one has enough money, they can build a shelter.
I'm beginning to believe it is the "root of all evil" but it also can buy you some comfort while you're sinning. No matter how much you have, it still is a real pain to give a hunk to an entity such as the 'Government'. Sort of like feeding the boogy man. :)
