I've been below decks on a couple of destroyers firing 5"/38s. That'll rattle your teeth, too. I've been in a chopper above one firing on a jeep carrier in the Med we got back from the French. Little smoke rings and all. The carrier was hit 13 of 18 times and settled by the bow. We stayed behind the guns until cease fire was confirmed. Watching an 800foot ship turn vertical and sink in a couple of minutes makes one think about going to sea! The next day the cruiser I was TDY on had swim call. After a few minutes in the water I thought of that carrier sinking straight down, and got back aboard ASAP! Stan
