Listed under the name T B Gurley, a record for FBG appears an enlisted man belonging to Capt D C Kelley's company, Forrest's 3rd Tennessee Cavalry. The "Kelley Troopers" enlisted at New Market AL, Aug 26, 1861.

FBG's record as Captain can be found with Russell's 4th Alabama Cavalry. It dates from May 21, 1862, New Market AL. Futher records appear in the Miscellaneous file under Frank Gurley. These include General Forrest's letter to General Steedman in behalf of FBG, presented by Maj J P Strange and an escort of twenty troopers.
