Mr. Keever, You might want to rethink, "any soldier that would ride a dapple gray, gray or white horse into battle was a brave man, as he was betting his life as an easy mark." Civil War battlefields were quickly covered in black power gun smoke. Modern actors often use cleaner burning powder and light loads and don't give a true impression of how quickly a Civil War fire fight would become engulfed in dapple grey, grey and white smoke. I would think an officer riding a horse with those colors was using common sense rather betting his life as an easy mark.
