Re: More Confederate Female Soldiers

Unfortunately I believe that the age of re-enacting is going to be severely cut back in the future. Probably after Gettysburg next year. Very few "Authentic" young people can get into the hobby. Those that do and have an interest have to be fitted out by the older troops with their castoffs and spares. The cost of equipment and travel is one thing which will kill the hobby. A musket I bought 20 years ago for $200 now cost $900.

I get tickled at all the people who claim to be "authentic" and what you see for the most part as reenactors and "living Historians" are old men in their 50's, 60's and 70's, not the 18 to 35 year olds that made up most of the armies on both sides. My GG grandpa was 37 when he enlisted in Sept. 1861. He could have taken an exemption under the Conscript Act of April 1862, but didn't. He and his brother, as privates, were the old men in his company of otherwise boys.

There is no such thing as an "Authentic" reenactment, or reenactor either, in the truest sence of the wording. So why do we always "Gag on the Knats" and "Swallow the Elephants". Would a soldier in 1861 have been carrying a new reproduction musket, or a Authentic 150 year old original. The original 1861 Springfield rifled musket is "Authentic", but its now 150 years old also.
